The Nevada Clearinghouse
for Missing and Exploited Children (NevCMEC) is under the direction of
the Nevada State Children’s Advocate, a Senior Deputy Attorney General
operating out of the Attorney General’s Las Vegas office. The
Clearinghouse was established by the Nevada Legislature to assist in the
effort to locate and recover missing and exploited children, and to
reunify families. Our mission is to assist the children, their families,
the police, other clearinghouses, non-profit child recovery
organizations, and communities by providing information, referrals,
training, and coordination among agencies in this most worthwhile
effort.
We work with police departments and sheriff’s offices in Nevada and in
other American states and Canadian provinces, as well as other countries
around the world, along with the National Center for Missing and
Exploited Children and the United States Department of Justice’s Office
of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) to bring our
missing children home.
We also work to decrease the risk of child abductions by increasing
awareness of the problem in our communities, and by assisting other
agencies in enforcing civil orders for the return of abducted children,
and in conducting public awareness campaigns and by educating parents
and children about ways to reduce the risk of abduction, exploitation,
and abuse of our children.
Through our website and webbulletins, we strive to provide information
on a broad array of information of interest to kids, parents, police and
policymakers as well, such as the rights of victims of crime, services
available to crime victims, crime prevention strategies, and child
safety information. Our website contains links to many agencies serving
children specifically, and victims of crime generally.
Because of the sheer volume of pertinent information that is available
relating to child safety, child wellbeing, and victim services, our
website includes a webbulletin with articles, news, analysis, and
interviews with newsmakers and policymakers on a variety of topics
related to children’s issues and victim services. These sections of the
site are updated regularly to keep the flow of information current,
pertinent, and helpful to those who need it.
In addition to directing the Nevada Clearinghouse for Missing and
Exploited Children, the Children’s Advocate also serves on the Clark
County Child Death Review Committee which meets monthly and makes
recommendations to State policymakers on methods and policies to reduce
fatal risks to children, and serves on the statewide Amber Alert
Committee.
One goal of this website is to ensure that the efforts of the entire
child recovery and child welfare systems, including both public and
non-profit agencies, are open and available to the people they serve—the
families and individual victims they serve, policymakers, practitioners,
and the citizens of Nevada who make these efforts possible. We strive to
do this by providing pertinent information, by explaining how these
systems work in plain, non-jargoned terms, and by demystifying the
valuable, yet often seemingly convoluted, contributions of the “experts”
from fields like law, government, public administration, and academia.
It is our belief that, since we all work together for a common goal,
that goal is best reached by communicating in the broadest possible way
so that all are included and invited to participate actively.
Please visit our website often for current information on child safety
issues and news affecting children’s issues. Comments, suggestions, and
input are always welcome, since our effort belongs to our communities
and our partners in the effort to return children to their homes and
their families.
Welcome, and thank you for stopping by. You are among friends.
