Governor's working Group on Methamphetamine Use Members


Mike Haley, Sheriff of Washoe County

Michael Haley has served the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office for 25 years, starting as Deputy in 1980. Today, the Sheriff’s Office is a modern, dedicated community-oriented law enforcement agency and is the second largest law enforcement agency in the State of Nevada.
Seriff Haley holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice with Honors from Northeast Missouri State University, Kirksville, Missouri. He is a graduate of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s National Academy, the Senior Management Institute at Harvard University and the Southwest Command College in Irvine, California. 
Sheriff Haley has worked in and supervised every division within the Sheriff’s Office including Administration, Detective, Patrol and Detention Divisions. He has been SWAT Team commander and DRT Team commander. He has additional experience in Training and Civil Divisions and was a member of the Regional Training Academy and the Child Homicide Task Force. Sheriff Haley has taught criminal justice classes at Truckee Meadows Community College. A majority of his law enforcement and military career has been in a command or supervisory position with major focus on budgetary restraint and responsibility.  
Sheriff Haley was born in Muscatine, Iowa and raised in farming communities in the Midwest. As the third of eleven children he went to work early in life and was expected to contribute to the family. He joined the military in 1971 to fulfill a sense of obligation and patriotism and was stationed for the most part in Germany. After an honorable discharge as Sergeant in 1974, he completed his Bachelor’s Degree while working part-time for the Kirksville Police Department. He moved to Reno, Nevada in 1980 and continued his law enforcement career as Deputy, progressing through the ranks to Undersheriff in 2006. He served in the Nevada National Guard as HHD First Sergeant from 1985 to 1992. 
Sheriff Haley and his wife, Laurie, have lived in Reno for over 25 years and have raised 2 sons, Steven and Brian. The family enjoys the company of their neighbors and friends, and a number of activities such as hiking, skiing, biking, and camping. He is a certified sailor from Olympic Sailing School. The Undersheriff is an active Board Member for the Children’s Cabinet and Red Cross.
